Tax planning and optimisation through offshore companies
Tax planning helps the owner decide in advance where the company will operate, which business bank account will receive revenue and how profit will be used later. An offshore company remains a convenient tool for international operations, ownership of foreign assets and work with counterparties in different countries. The best result comes from a combination of a properly selected company, an offshore business bank account, contracts and a clear payment scheme. This makes it possible to receive profit and plan business expenses in advance, even before operations begin.
- Start with the source of profit: the client’s country, the type of goods or services, the currency and the expected turnover.
- Choose the offshore company together with the company’s business bank account so that the country of registration and opening of the business bank account match the real business.
- Calculate the tax result using three elements: the company, the source of income and the owner’s tax residence.
- For an owner who is a Ukrainian tax resident, include controlled foreign company rules in the annual calendar of the structure from the moment it is created.
Tax planning and an offshore company: how to use them?
The main business goal remains simple: earn more, keep more profit for business development and understand the cost of the international structure in advance. An offshore company gives the owner a separate legal entity for contracts, foreign assets and settlements with international counterparties. Its benefit for the business appears when the company is built into a real transaction scheme and has a suitable business bank account.
Therefore, the choice of country should not start with the advertised registration price. First determine who pays the company, what exactly the money is paid for, where suppliers and employees are located, which currencies are needed and where the profit will go. After that, compare several jurisdictions and banks that work with this description of the company’s activity.
Company and offshore business bank account
For an international company, the business bank account is a working part of the structure. Revenue is received through it, suppliers, professional services, investments and company expenses are paid through it. Opening a business bank account takes into account the geography of payments, the average transaction amount, currencies and the need for local payment details.
Depending on the business, the account can be opened with a bank, a European payment system (EMI) or an online bank. For a trading company, international transfers and work with suppliers are important; for services, convenient incoming payments from clients; for e-commerce, settlements through marketplaces, acquiring and online card payments, electronic wallets and multi-currency company accounts.
Before applying to a bank, prepare a clear description of the business: what the company does, who its clients are, what contracts are concluded and what payments are expected. Add a set of corporate and supporting documents. This makes it possible to apply immediately to a bank or payment system suitable for the actual activity.
Where the tax result arises
Modern tax planning is not calculated using only one sign, “offshore or not offshore”. The final result depends on the country of the company itself, the source of income, the place of actual operations and the owner’s tax residence. Therefore, two identical companies can give different results for owners from different countries or for businesses with different client geography.
It is useful for the owner to prepare a simple income and expense calculation: turnover, direct expenses, cost of employees and contractors, bank fees, annual company maintenance and expected profit. Then apply the tax regime of the selected jurisdiction and the rules of the owner’s country to this model. This calculation shows the real cost of the structure before registration.
Which jurisdictions to compare
Classic offshore companies differ in corporate law, annual cost, accounting requirements and access to banks. In practice, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Seychelles and other well-known jurisdictions are often compared for international tasks. For a business that needs European payment details or a particular country reputation, the comparison can also include the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Switzerland and other European structures.
The registration cost by itself rarely determines the quality of the solution. A more expensive company may be more profitable because of the bank, a convenient account currency or clear work with a specific counterparty. Conversely, a classic offshore company may be optimal for owning a foreign asset or for international activity where an additional European structure does not add an economic result.
Company management and annual support
The owner should understand in advance which obligations arise after registration: company renewal, bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements where required, updating corporate documents and servicing the business bank account. We include these costs in the calculation of the first year and the following annual budget so that the cost of the structure is clear in advance.
Most banking operations are now performed remotely. The owner manages the business bank account through online banking, confirms payments and receives statements electronically. The accountant and corporate administrator use this data for bookkeeping and annual company support.

What changed in 2026
For Ukrainian tax residents, controlled foreign company rules are already part of normal annual planning in 2026. Reporting for 2025 is filed together with the relevant annual declaration: for legal entities the deadline was 2 March 2026, for individuals 1 May 2026; if a shortened report is filed, the full report for 2025 can be submitted by 31 December 2026.
The conclusion for a new international structure is positive: it is convenient to design the company, the business bank account and the owner’s tax calendar at the same time. Then, even before the first transaction, the cash flows, annual documents and real maintenance budget are clear.
Tell us about your business — we will register the company and support the opening of a working business bank account taking into account your business scheme. We will be happy to answer additional questions. We wish you success in business and the right decisions!
